An electronic artist known for his compositional fusion of music and nature, Dominik Eulberg describes himself as a “raving ornithologist and master of reconciled contradictions”. Dominik marries his love for conservation with the techno genre by creating immersive listening experiences. He aims to create an acoustic image that brings nature to life through the medium of his music, depicting scenes that portray an interaction with the natural world.

Dominik began writing music in the early 1990s and credits his childhood in rural Germany for both igniting his passion for conservation, and being the continued source of his musical inspiration. He studied ecological geography at university before working as a National Park Ranger and is an established conservationist, ornithologist, biologist, ecologist, and author. While studying, Eulberg worked in a record shop and cites his early musical influences as coming from the local scenes during this time; on one side of his hometown of Westerwald there were the strains of experimental techno coming out of Cologne, and on the other was the Frankfurt trance scene.

Carving out a niche as a techno trailblazer, Dominik has enjoyed a musical career spanning 28 years. Since the release of his debut single ‘Der Hecht Im Karpfenteich’ in 2003, Eulberg has released an extensive catalogue that includes six LPs, 54 EPs, and five films, with an additional stint releasing tracks under the pseudonym ‘Rocco Branco’. An award-winning artist, producer, and touring DJ, Dominik has performed at prestigious clubs and festivals around the world including Printworks, Awakenings, and Loveland festivals.

Eulberg has remixed well-known tracks from an array of electronic artists, with over 100 creations released to date. His remixing trademark of deconstructing and reforming elements into an unrecognisably dreamy techno soundscape is akin to taking a wardrobe once created for the corporate boardroom and reimagining it for Burning Man.

Nothing about Dominik Eulberg is typical, least of all his own distinctive sound in the techno space. Embracing a much softer, more emotional, melodic sound than traditional techno, even Eulberg’s ‘floor-filler’ tracks have an air of whimsy and ethereal soundscape within them.

Part of Eulberg’s signature sound is undoubtedly his clever manipulation of instruments that continually evolve throughout a track. As synthesizers seamlessly metamorphose from one instrument timbre to another, and bass sounds are filtered to subtly climb into the mid-range, there are undoubtedly parallels that can be found between nature and these immersive techniques. Likewise, the juxtaposition between the sub-heavy kick and light-hearted pitched percussion instrument sounds Eulberg favours in the high-end work to produce a spacious, rhythmically meditative feel.

The overarching effect of these combinations and techniques all contribute to the listening experience of feeling encompassed by Dominik’s elemental sound, an effect you can achieve yourself by delving into the rich playable environments of Habitat. Blending evolving synth textures and leads from Dominik’s personal collection of boutique analog synthesizers, orchestral samples recorded on the famed Teldex Scoring Stage, and organic FX, Habitat delivers 10 playable landscapes to explore.

Dominik’s thinking runs deep when it comes to tuning into his creative process, with a philosophy centred around the idea that prehistoric evolutionary long-term memory of tones ties into our innate emotion and interpretation of music. He notes that we have a built-in affinity for soothing tones and rhythms that evoke the comforting reminder of a heartbeat, for example, and believes this predisposition is hard-wired in our nature. This gentle, reassuring and emotion-led quality is present throughout Dominik’s work, and is undoubtedly part of what makes him one of today’s most inspired electronic artists.

Eulberg explains his blueprint for exciting music is experiencing a walk in the woods, whereby turning every corner produces a new surprise and encounter. He aims to remain accessible and able to take listeners on an organic journey with his music, particularly in his sixth album Avichrom, which he began in lockdown.

Following the format of the acclaimed 2019 LP Mannigfaltig, which focused on biological diversity and featured twelve tracks named after animals, Avichrom is a neologism which translates as ‘bird colors’. The eleven tracks on the new LP pay homage to individual bird species, and the theme of the album celebrates the variety of their plumage. Eulberg explains that the birds served as guides on his musical expedition into ornithology:

“Mother Nature has used her entire color palette here. For each of the eleven colors, a native bird species can be found by name. The eleven tracks on the album are named after these species. In the end, making music is nothing other than the selection of an infinite number of options, and in this respect the birds helped me find a common thread in the midst of all these possibilities.”
