Spatial bass
The Low End Orchestra re-imagines the contemporary scoring orchestra by combining three key elements: A bass-heavy sound; symmetry and spatial movement; and a wealth of microphone options for atmos and surround mixing. Recorded at AIR Studios Lyndhurst with some of the UK’s top players, this is a sound that inspires new ideas, and a toolset to help you realize them professionally.

Large ensembles of bass-heavy strings, woodwinds, and brass playing notes that shift and move—plus sub-bass and sound design, and a wealth of spatial mixing options.
The Low End Orchestra is all about sound moving within a space—we re-positioned the instrument sections to create a new, symmetrical orchestral layout, and created sounds that move from left to right and back on the X axis, and from front to back to front on the Y axis.

Carefully designed ensembles
The Low End Orchestra consists mainly of orchestral instruments, but not always those you’ll encounter very often. Everything is in the bass-register—no trumpet, no violin, and certainly no piccolo. For the strings, we have regular celli and basses but a lot of them: The sound of 22 celli playing together at AIR Lyndhurst is something very special. The woodwinds include some wonderfully rich and rare instruments, such as the contra-alto flute and contrabass clarinet, arranged carefully to deliver a low, earthy tone. A fantastically powerful brass section adds a raucous punch, and the re-amped analog synth patches allow you to stack your sub-bass.
Everything is carefully selected to deliver an inspiring, detailed, and nuanced sound, allowing you to explore your ideas with the strongest possible foundations.
The Low End Ensembles
Spatial moving sound
The Low End Orchestra makes movement a playable tool for composing and writing music. Each movement is a performance—each one is a device for you to weave motion into your productions. Importantly, many articulations let you control the direction of the movement—check the performance tab in SINE.
If you’re mixing in stereo, the X axis movements are especially effective, and the Y axis gives you shifting timbres, and control over depth and diffusion. If you’re mixing in atmos, surround, or any other spatial audio system, your possibilities are limitless.
The orchestra re-imagined
We set out from scratch to create a contemporary sound, and realized we need to think about more than just the selection of instruments. As the concepts started to crystallize, we realized that arranging the players symmetrically would give us the best canvas to create the moving sounds we had in our minds—and thus the re-imagined orchestra came to life. The room, the specific instruments, the size of the ensembles, the positioning… everything is carefully considered to create an intensely powerful but nuanced and emotional sound.
21 mic options
If the sounds are moving through the room, we need to capture that movement somehow, so you can use that movement when you’re writing. Hence the vast range of microphone options: We wanted to capture a mixture of traditional, contemporary, and experimental techniques, giving you the maximum range of options for mixing for cinema.
Mics used ranged from our traditional OT tree setup to more experimental mics like the ambisonic Octomic from Core Sound, and a re-purposed NS10 speaker that captured sub bass for an LFE channel. All these options offer a specific angle on the sound of the room and the performances. There are stereo mixes for front and back channels to get you started quickly and importantly, everything blends nicely with our classic Teldex sound.
Re-amped synths and sound design
For optimal layering, we also recorded bass sounds from an analog synthesizer and reamped them in Lyndhurst Hall at Air. These synth sounds have 3 different note lengths, and an additional DI signal to access the raw sound directly from the synth.
We also handed the entire set of recordings over to our sound designers, who created more than 50 processed patches—perfect for layering up with the rest of the collection, but also extremely useful as instruments in their own right.
Recorded at AIR Studios
The Low End Orchestra was recorded at AIR Studios’ Lyndhurst Hall. We felt it offered the ideal sound for this project, and working in the UK also gave us direct access to some specialist players and instruments. Plus we knew from our previous projects that the team around John Prestage was absolutely top notch.
For this project, we flipped the usual floorplan of Lyndhurst Hall around, so the orchestra is facing the organ. The same setup used for recording Interstellar and many other scores, this positioning allows a little more space at the back, and delivers a little more low-end too.
"I had the privilege of seeing Low End Orchestra in its inception at AIR Studios—sousaphones, cimbassi, double basses deployed in force promised an epic underpinning currently missing from the sample library world. This is instant template material and a library that is massive not only in sound, but in how usable it is."
